Malachi Gillihan | Survivor • Practitioner • Researcher • Teacher
MA, East-West Psychology; Certified Spiritual Counselor
Malachi is a trauma specialist, yogi, and spiritual counselor based in Berkeley, California, serving the East Bay and beyond. He is a multi-modal healing professional, incorporating both his lived experience as a male survivor of child sexual trauma, along with his research and practice in integral, East-West approaches to trauma recovery, healing, and growth.
Malachi earned his Masters in East-West Psychology along with his certification as a Spiritual Counselor from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco, CA. He is currently completing his PhD in which he is evaluating a new group-based intervention for survivors of sexual trauma.
Malachi maintains a small private practice, working with trauma survivors in both individual and group-based settings, and trains therapists and other healing professionals on trauma-informed and trauma-focused approaches; his research focuses on recovery for sexual trauma survivors; and he continues to facilitate yoga, somatic practices, meditation, and retreats.
In his private practice, Malachi's sessions typically run 75 minutes, and incorporate talking about issues and challenges, applying body-mind practices and tools such as yoga, guided meditations, mindfulness-based stress reduction, qigong and other approaches, attachment-based work, and psychoeducation (i.e., useful information about the nervous system that helps clients release shame about why they feel the way they do, and how they can use that information to get better). The combination of theory, talking, and practices, be it in movement or stillness, has a significant body of research behind it, suggesting it is an effective, integral treatment approach for issues including anxiety, depression, panic attacks, sleep issues, chronic pain, digestive problems, ADHD, procrastination, relationship difficulties, troubles with intimacy and sexuality, compulsions and addictions.
Malachi's teachers and mentors include Dr. Dan Siegel, Judith Lasater, Sean Feit-Oakes, Deb Dana, Judith Herman, Elizabeth Stanley, David Lisak, Jim Struve, and Michael Brian Baker in areas including interpersonal neurobiology, the Polyvagal Theory, somatic approaches to trauma recovery, attachment, mindfulness-based stress reduction, yoga instruction and yoga for trauma, Buddhist approaches to counseling, breathwork, and insight meditation.
