The unfolding climate change causing devastating wildfires, power outages, water shortages, hurricanes, and planetary destruction is our “new normal.” When it is not somewhere else or someone else (on the weather channel) but in your own back yard it’s quite real. It seems like an endless climate assault that leads to existential angst for everyone, particularly our youth … who are most impressionable. Our children are feeling afraid and betrayed.
Harvard Medical School and Columbia University discovered higher than normal suicide and suicidal ideation rates among people who have just experienced extreme weather patterns, including wildfires and extreme storms. Greta Thunberg, the (16) year old environmental activist from Stockholm, Sweden who inspired young people around the world to leave school and march said: “Why should I be studying for a future that soon may be no more, when no one is doing anything to save the future.”
At this meeting we will explore what we can do as a community of mindfulness based clinicians and healers to support our clients (particularly young people), our community at large, and colleagues who are suffering from eco-anxiety. The discussion will be led by the co-founders and co-directors of Northern California Mindfulness Institute and East Bay Mindfulness Center – Drs. Josh Wilson and James H. Bramson.
