Carrie Katz, LMFT

Carrie has been working in the field of body–mind arts for nearly thirty years. She began her career as a bodyworker, earning certification as a massage therapist and acupressurist from the Acupressure Institute in 1993. While working with clients, she was deeply moved by how emotions, memories, and beliefs would surface through touch, witnessing firsthand how these experiences are stored in the body. Motivated to help people explore these issues more deeply, Carrie pursued a Master’s degree at The California Institute of Integral Studies in the Somatic (body-oriented) Psychology Program. Upon graduation, she became a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in 2002.

Carrie has trained in multiple schools of somatic psychotherapy, including the San Francisco Hakomi Institute and Stanley Keleman’s Center for Energetic Studies, and has also practiced and taught martial arts. Her professional work includes extensive training and clinical experience with trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, supporting individuals and families in Oakland and Berkeley as well as refugees from Central America and Southeast Asia. Many of the clients she has worked with are survivors of political torture, rape, child abuse and neglect, systemic racism and poverty, and other forms of violence.

In addition to her trauma work, Carrie has spent many years supporting people struggling with depression, anxiety, feelings of “stuckness,” life transitions, parenting challenges, and other personal concerns.
