Andre Decary, LMFT

Some time in the late 1990s, I was in a clinical gathering with many colleagues and we were asked to introduce ourselves and our work. When my turn came what emerged from me was: “I was a tortured soul and I am not anymore. I believe that I can help others who are in a similar predicament”. That statement came to me when I was 50 years old.

What I want to offer is helping clients become an authority over their psyche - not being authoritarian, but rather developing the skills and the knowledge to transform the psyche we’ve inherited into the psyche we want.

Change is a natural process of life. When working with clients we identify the processes that prevent change from happening. If one wants to become an adult one must know when they are not being an adult. It is somewhat easy to see when another person is being childish, reactive or inappropriate. It is much more difficult to perceive this in ourselves. The first step is to recognize, and the second is to openly acknowledge to ourselves, with kindness and firmness, that we are not being an adult. The transformative process comes out of that realization and the ensuing relationship one develops with our internal world and the external world.

In my therapeutic work I draw on my years of being a monk and the practice of mindfulness, as well as extensive training in Gestalt therapy, Hakomi body centered therapy, Non violent communication, Bodynamics and other modalities. These practices have led me to understand that while information is not knowledge, the embodiment of information can become knowledge. Through the therapeutic process my hope is that you and I will gain knowledge and, hopefully, some wisdom as well.
